The production is bland, the lyrics are incredibly simplistic with almost no depth (save for a few lines on Too Afraid and most of To Be Human), and her voice is just so reserved. I understand why people like it, but it is simply not a good album. Also, forgive me for my many grammatic errors. Your opinion is totally valid and I just wanted to give my views on this. Although this is all speculation and I could be wrong. I think Marina is trying to make music for herself first and for no one else, so she choose to write songs that maybe don't hit as close to home as they used to but reflect on what she currently thinks about. I call it artist dilemma because there is a choice you have to make in your art where you have to ask yourself if you are willing to sacrifice your happiness for relatability and connection to your audience. It almost gives you the mentality that you have to suffer to make art that is relatable. As an amateur song writer myself, writing deep and gritty lyrics comes from a place of deep mental strain. But what I find interesting here is that (at least from my perspective, I could be totally wrong and this is all speculation) as Marina has been growing as an artist, she has also seemed to grow as a person and just seems happier than she was a when she wrote songs in TFJ or even Froot. I agree with you, Love+Fear was definitely underwhelming to me, as I come to her music for her intimate lyrics that has a specific yet universal meaning (or maybe I live in a bubble and it's not universal lol).
